In the period June 2-3, 2012, Technology Transfer and Innovation hosted an Industrial Workshop dedicated to recent achievements in modeling and computer simulation of filtration and separation processes. The goal of the Workshop was to engage relevant industries with the current technical and computational capabilities of the new KAUST SRI Center for Numerical Porous Media (NumPor). The SRI NumPor Center is a new initiative, directed by Yalchin Efendiev from Texas A&M and co-directed by Victor Calo from KAUST.

Eleven companies from Saudi Arabia and the Middle East, specializing in either manufacturing or operating filtration equipment, attended the workshop seeking present-day research results and/or software tools that can help in finding innovative solutions for their products or processes. The Workshop covered topics relevant to various industries such as petroleum, food, automotive, air conditioning, water treatment, chemical, construction and agriculture.

The first day of the Workshop provided an overview of the objectives and intended direction of the Center and the second day focused on filtration and separation applications and case studies. The sessions included presentations from Victor Calo; Oleg Iliev, Center Associate Director, and Konrad Steiner, Head of the Department Flow and Material Simulations at Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics a(partner at NumPor).
